If you’ve ever wondered how to combine strength, balance, and connection in one joyful activity, you’re in the right spot. I’m excited to give you a friendly introduction to AcroYoga – a fun, energetic way of moving that brings people together. Whether you're experienced or completely new, this guide will help you understand the basics and hopefully inspire you to give it a go.

What is AcroYoga?

AcroYoga blends yoga, acrobatics, and healing arts. It involves two or more people working together to create lifts, balances, and flowing movements. It’s about trust, teamwork, and connection – not just strength.

A typical AcroYoga session starts with a warm-up, using stretches and basic yoga poses to get the body ready. Then you’ll move into partner work. One person is the base (who supports), one is the flyer (who balances in the air), and there’s often a spotter for safety and guidance.

If you’re just starting, look out for beginner classes in your area – many focus on the basics, with a gentle pace to build confidence.

The Power of Trust and Communication

One of the loveliest parts of AcroYoga is how it helps build trust and communication. Since you’re relying on each other for balance and safety, clear communication is key. That means regularly checking in, listening, and being patient.

Here are a few tips to help:

  • Start simple – Begin with easy poses to build confidence.

  • Use clear words – Agree on signals for when you’re ready or uncomfortable.

  • Listen well – Pay attention to your partner’s feedback.

  • Celebrate progress – Even small wins matter.

  • Respect boundaries – Never push anyone past their comfort zone.

By creating a supportive space, you’ll help each other grow – and often form strong bonds off the mat as well.

How is AcroYoga Different from Yoga?

While both yoga and AcroYoga share roots, they’re quite different in experience.

Beginner-Friendly Poses to Try

Starting with the right poses builds confidence and keeps things safe. Here are a few to try with a partner:

  • Bird Pose – The base lies on their back and lifts the flyer horizontally by the hips.

  • Throne Pose – The flyer sits on the base’s feet, supported by their hands.

  • Foot to Hand – The flyer balances on the base’s hands, like a mini handstand.

  • Back Bird – Like Bird Pose, but the flyer faces the opposite direction.

Always remember:

  • Warm up properly.

  • Use a spotter for safety.

  • Talk before, during, and after each pose.

  • Take breaks and drink water.

  • Go at your own pace – patience is key!

Building a Supportive AcroYoga Community

One of the best parts of AcroYoga is the lovely community it creates. Whether you’re practising with mates, family, or people you’ve just met, a kind and welcoming space makes all the difference.

Here’s how to help build that:

  • Encourage beginners – Share tips and cheer them on.

  • Host regular meet-ups – Make space for practice and socialising.

  • Give kind feedback – Help others grow with respect.

  • Welcome everyone – All ages, body types, and backgrounds.

  • Put safety first – Spotting and clear communication matter.

A strong, supportive community makes learning more fun and helps everyone feel included.

Growing Through AcroYoga

As you continue with AcroYoga, you’ll find it’s about more than just movement. It’s a path to personal growth, trust, and joyful connection. You’ll challenge yourself, laugh, and grow – together.

Remember, even experts were beginners once. Celebrate each step, stay kind to yourself, and enjoy the journey.

If you’re ready to explore more, look up local classes or online resources to find helpful teaching and a warm community.
